Despite the overwhelmingly positive feedback, some patrons find the cash-only policy a bit inconvenient, especially in today's card-heavy world. A few have mentioned occasional issues with the fish being served cold or not fresh, although this seems to be rare. Some diners comment that the proprietor's grumpy demeanor can detract from the otherwise inviting environment, which can leave first-time visitors feeling a bit uneasy. Moreover, while the menu has a decent selection, there’s some desire for more variety beyond the traditional fish and chips. Lastly, on rare occasions, the oil quality has been questioned, which could affect the overall taste of certain dishes.
Piping hot chips and plenty of them, high quality big cod serving. Excellent. Cash only. Update 01SEP25: Been again. Piping hot chips and high quality big cod again! Consistent quality which is great!
Great food nice fish and chips hot and crispy the food was good and hot filled me nicely 👍
I'm a regular customer here. Always friendly. Everything you need from a local chippy.
It’s all about the fish — serving a fairly decent range — and as a consequence seems to deal only in the freshest of the stuff. It really shows in the flaky, moist and sweet-tasting cod that gently steams within a light but crunchy batter. The chips are very decent too, the guy that serves always comes across as a quite a grumpy chap but he is doing a fine job
Great fish 'n' chip shop. Friendly, professional staff. Clean, tidy interior. Good-sized portions. Nice atmosphere.
I love this place so much. Wherever I've lived in Reading I travel here just for their curry sauce 😋 I don't want to mark down but should mention they don't take card payments and their waiting bench is really uncomfortable. As I always get chicken I have to wait so a permanent thin cushion spanning the whole bench would be a good idea ☺
They take your order, put the fish in the fryer, and you get a hot and flaky fish in a crispy batter. What else.
